Ishiura Shrine’s unique Omikuji system

In 2021 I travelled to Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture in March as part of my usual “birthday week” celebration.
When I travel I usually only hard plan 1 or 2 destinations ,leaving the rest of my journey up to how I feel and where my feet take me. After exploring the gardens I went walking around the city and found Ishiura Shrine. 
In a very general sense I enjoy going to different shrines and getting Omikuji (fortune paper) from them so I went in with the intention of just getting the paper and leaving.

However as I was getting the paper I noticed a big sign above the Omikuji box explaining the various types of fortune there were. In total there were 17 different types of Omikuji you may get.

Typically Omikuji fortunes have 5-7 possible fortunes you can get, with some shrines occasionally expanding it to 12. 17 fortune variations is considered uncommon. 

The Omikuji variations 

There are 17 different fortunes. 1 being the most luckiest and the 17th being the most unluckiest.
The 17 fortunes are as follows

1. 福福福(みふく)   — Superb Fortune x 3 .You have 1/3000 chance getting this.
2. 幸 — Happiness . You have 1/1000 chance getting this.
3. 卯吉・申吉 — Striking Fortune (couldn’t find an exact way to translate this). You have 1/500 chance getting this.
4. 大大吉 — Great Great Fortune . You have 1/300 chance getting this.
5. 大大中 — Mid Great Great Fortune
6. 大吉 – Great Fortune
7. 中吉 – Mid Good Fortune
8. 中中吉 – Mid Mid Good Fortune
9. 吉 – Good Fortune
10. 吉吉吉(みきち) – Good Fortune x 3
11. 小吉 – Small Fortune
12. 小小吉 – Small Small Fortune
13. 末吉 – Uncertain luck / Future luck
14. 末末吉 – Uncertain x2 luck
15. 末末末(みすえ)  Very Uncertain luck x3
16. 末凶 – Uncertain Misfortune. You have 1/1000 chance getting this.
17. 凶 – Misfortune. You have 1/2000 chance getting this.

Glancing at Japanese blogs I saw that previously there were only 10 fortune variations at this shrine about 7 years ago. In 2018, there were 15 fortune variations with a 1/1000 chance you could get the “Superb Fortune” fortune. It seems the shrine is keen on expanding it’s system. I really wonder how many they can think of.

After getting my Omikuji which was 大吉 – Great Fortune I looked for where to hang it . I saw to the side there were a lot of Omikuji hanging, it almost felt like it was an Omikuji Tunnel! It was a really beautiful way to hang the Omikuji
